Discover why silence can feel uncomfortable and how to embrace it
One of the main objectives of the 21-Day Walking Meditation Program is to cultivate your mental muscles, allowing space for stillness without fear. Many people feel uneasy with silence and being alone, often due to the thoughts that arise during these moments. This discomfort is natural. However, if you push through initial unease, you will discover a profound feeling of calm empowerment.
The Fear of Silence:
Our discomfort with silence stems from the busy nature of our lives. Sometimes we fill our life us as a way to distract ourselves from what I like to call “the chatterbox”. When external noise fades, internal chatter becomes more pronounced, including worries, doubts, and unresolved emotions. This discomfort is also a reaction from our *Lizard Brain, which craves patterns of familiarity.
*Lizard brain (amygdala): your brains overcaffeinated fight/flight protection mechanism that likes to disasterize every scenario before your rational thinking brain clocks in. Not an actual lizard. Calm it with slow breaths and “name it to tame it.” Read more about how this ancient part of our brain causes havoc in our lives and how to teach it to serve you not sabotage you.
Embracing Stillness:
Learning to embrace silence and stillness is essential for reducing anxiety and developing a sense of peace within your inner world. Start small and gradually extend the time spent in this space so that it transforms from fear into a sanctuary of calm.
Steps to Embrace Silence:
Start Small: Begin with short periods of silence, perhaps just a minute or two each day. Gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.
Create a Safe Space: Find a quiet, comfortable spot where you can sit undisturbed first thing in the morning. You can prioritize meditative moments as your day gets busy, but try to find 3 minutes of relative quiet early in the morning.
Focus on Your Breath: Use your breath as an anchor. When your thoughts wander, gently bring your focus back.
Observe Without Judgment: Notice thoughts and feelings without judgment, allowing them to drift away.
Extend the Gap: Gradually increase the duration of your silent practice, turning the gap into a refuge.
Benefits of Embracing Silence:
Reduce anxiety and stress.
Develop a deeper understanding of your thoughts and emotions.
Cultivate a sense of peace and comfort within.
Discover the hidden treasures within the gap.
Embracing silence and stillness can be a powerful tool on your journey toward mindfulness. Gift yourself the opportunity to explore the richness that silence can bring to your life.
